Participant 4

Participant number:
4

Tried out a lot of different CMS's and worked on a custom CMS. He develops the interface of this CMS primarly, has limited experience with Joomla and Drupal.

Good quotes:
Split summary at cursor - I have no idea what that means
The idea of tags is one example of this abstract concept of taxonomy
There is definitely a learning curve.. as a new user, it was confusing
Observation log:

TASK 1

looking for example content
was thinking with standard installation he might have a "mock site".
still not sure if he's on a front page or the admin section when looking at main page after installation
"split summary at cursor, I have no idea what that means
"im very confused"
"not gonna do that"
note: he did guess intended purpose
"it would be nice if there was a wysisyg"
clicks help text, lost his state when trying to create a new page
Maybe rethink order of vertical tabs
doesn't get that "authored by" is a autocomplete
would be nice if the published date was some sort of date selection
"sticky at top of list" - no idea what that means
ISSUE: page comments are read only by default.. should be disabled
ISSUE: comment settings needs help text.
SOLUTION: "read only" -> "locked"?
he had no idea what it meant in the context of a page.. he understands the meaning, but does not know when there would be more than one "page" on a single page.
ISSUE don't understand difference between "read only" and "read/write" comments
ISSUE: parent item selection overwhelming
"I don't know what it would mean to make this page a child of an administrator ... or a child of a theme"?
ISSUE: selecting a parent menu item does not warn if you dont have a menu title
he selected a parent item, but no title... no menu item showing up
ISSUE: No read more link
ISSUE: blockquote not enabled by default.
http://drupal.org/node/197425

TASK 3

Doesn't know what main menu, navigation.
possible solution, region selection from menu add page
ISSUE: menu name and title are in reverse order.
ISSUE: should automatically create menu name from menu title, like content types
ISSUE: drag and drop help text appears for empty menus.
when looking at add menu item screen "ooooooookaaaay"
"i have yet to see anything about path"
"It would be great if it gave me a menu to browse content"
expects path auto because he installed "clean urls"
thinks clean URLS == derived from title
possible solution, dont even give the option to enable clean urls on install.. if the server is setup correctly, who wouldnt want it?
where is my content?!
"Because I didn't publish that other item to the front page, I don't know where to find it now"
wants to position menu from the menu itself
admin/build/block
"menus must live in a block, probably"
"I can't tell a menu where to position itself, it must be in some other item which can be positioned - it's gotta be in blocks given my options"
creating new block to display menu now
…watches the entire room sigh…
"interesting......"
"honestly at this point I have no idea how to put that menu into the left column"
Gave up on blocks, back to site configuration.
back to blocks with guidance
ISSUE: Help text on blocks page hides the list of blocks.
"So there is this "left sidebar" block... no indecation that regions are really "regions"
found block!
"I wonder why I have this region select when I can just drag and drop it"
SOLUTION: region select only with > 30 blocks?
ISSUE: a menu is a block, I can't create a menu from the blocks page as a type of block.

TASK 4

switching to beginner plan
has an idea of how blocks work, thinks it should be fairly straightforward
seems confused by the page visibility settings
realizes for the first time that admin interface is meshed with public interface
Seems confused by the new regions that have shown up on the admin/build/blocks page
(30 minutes in)

TASK 5

still confused over page and articles
uses page because that's what he knows how to do
ISSUE: cant: ^
"I want something to put these workshops in"
ISSUE: description of articles does not mention tagging
node/add
(over and over)
http://drupal.org/node/233200
entering 5 workshops one by one.
"oh.. ok, maybe this is flexible"
"I don't know what vocabulary means"
"the idea of tags is one example of this abstract concept of taxonomy:"
thinks concept is abstract
Completely understands taxonomy module.
confused by the fact that he has not seen the tags vocab at ths point.. (because he has only created pages)
lets just add new new vocabulary
adding new vocabulary.
"because it's so abstract it's kind of hard to understand at first what you can do with this"... "lets add a new vocabulary and see what happens"
lightbulb
totally stuffing the deer now. lightbulb definitely in full effect.
worked the form in reverse order, frist selected type, then the content type, then the name of the vocab
Thinking about vocabulary permissions - doesn't want skill vocabulary to apply to different types of pages.
maybe rename to help text then?
that's a separate field :(
ISSUE ^
Re-ordered terms with drag and drop straight away.
once again entered them in order he wanted them displayed.
Wants form builder on node/add
created nodes, created vocab, created terms, then went back and tagged nodes.. realizes that this was backwards.

TASK 7

initial guess: site configuration
found themes under site building
is theme really site building?
admin/build/themes - already some themes installed.
Expects CSS and template editor in the UI.
"I dont know what it means to have multiple themes enabled at the same time"
note: he picked about the ugliest color possible. the rest of this test will suck :(

TASK 8

"wondering if theres some global setting to override all article settings, if I had to go back and set that for every article that would suck"
Expects global settings for comments.
"so this would probably be some sort of permissions"
(clicking around admin, into site settings, into user management)
now on admin/user/permisiosns
isn't sure if there's inheritance of permissions
ISSUE: Post comments + post comments without approval - "is there inheritance"
"whats edit role"
Roles + permissions are easy.

TASK 9

Path module - easy.
WTF moment: killer bug.
ISSSUUUEEE: leading forward slash kills path aliases.
solution: remove slash if it's the first character in alias
fairly awesome user though, goes back to admin/content/node to edit content again
"supposed to be a relative url.. relative to what I don't know"
"it would be cool if it just took that out for me"
Looking for metatags.
ISSUE: Nobody sees the search box that is provided by default by the theme
Trying each of the three search boxes separately to see why it isn't working.
assumes it is a problem with the content itself
Expects to find settings to enable search for content.
ISSUE: no configuration on admin/build/mdules
Looking for config on admin/build/modules - found more help.
reading search help
reads help and understands the issue
"at this point, I'm kind of upset I didn't see this information anywhere else"
task complete

General discussion:

"Some of this stuff like taxonomy is just unintuitive and offputting - I didn't realise I had to go and set all these things up"

"there is definitely a learning curve.. but as a new user, it was confusing"
